Seventh Day Adventists

sda logo_140X138

The Seventh-Day Adventist church is a very subtle and illusive cult. They are the slickest at cloning a legitimate “Christian” religion. They will stand up and say they believe in salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, and then add works after they get you in. They believe you can lose your salvation if you don’t follow the teachings of the church.  They will even claim they esteem the Bible above the works of their prophet, when in fact they base most of their doctrine on the visions and dreams of their prophet Ellen G. White (1827-1915).  They use double-talk to deceive those who are taken in by this cult. They trace their roots to American preacher William Miller (1782–1849), who predicted the Second Coming would occur between March 21, 1843, and March 21, 1844. Because he and his followers proclaimed Christ’s imminent advent, they were known as "Adventists."

When Christ failed to appear, Miller reluctantly endorsed the position of a group of his followers known as the "seventh-month movement," who claimed Christ would return on October 22, 1844 (in the seventh month of the Jewish calendar).

When this didn’t happen either, Miller forswore predicting the date of the Second Coming, and his followers broke up into a number of competing factions. Miller would have nothing to do with the new theories his followers produced, including ones which attempted to save part of his 1844 doctrine. He rejected this and other teachings being generated by his former followers, including those of Ellen Gould White. Later a story was made up to save Miller’s reputation that Christ instead entered into His second atonement work. This is blasphemy and contradicts the Bible’s teaching that Christ entered once into the Holy of Holies to make an atonement for sin (Hebrews 9:12).  They teach that Christ entered into the sanctuary of the most holy to review the lives of all believers. They believe those with unrepented sin are blotted out of the book of life. The Bible teaches that Christ paid it all 2000 years ago and that salvation is without works or merit on our part (Titus 3:5).

They believe at the great white throne judgment of the lost will have their sins placed on satan by Christ and he will then be cast into the lake of fire. White says in TGC page 422: "When Christ, by virtue of His own blood, removes the sins of His people from the heavenly sanctuary at the close of His ministration, He will place them upon satan, who, in the execution of the judgement, must bear the final penalty." That of course makes “satan” their saviour instead of Christ.

They believe when the unsaved die they will just cease to exist, their theory is God is too loving to make anyone suffer for all of eternity. They believe there is no conscious existence between the time of death and the resurrection commonly referred to as “soul sleep.” That is not what the Bible teaches though (Hebrews 9:27; Revelation 21:8).  Their doctrine is very similar to Jehovah Witness doctrine and this is an example of one of those similarities.  Both movements started about the same time.

They believe so strongly in Sabbath keeping that they claim “Sunday keeping” as they call it is the mark of the beast. That is not what Revelation 13 teaches though. The sabbath was not given to the Gentiles, it was only for the Jew and only for the Old Testament.  Saturday is still the sabbath, but Sunday, resurrection day, the Lord’s day is not the sabbath. It is the day the New Testament Christians met and still do (John 20:19; Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 16:2). Insisting that a Gentile in the New Testament keep the sabbath is silly anyway.  Jesus exercised his sovereign power to abrogate the sabbath law in at least some way. This is why he states, "For the Son of Man is Lord of the sabbath" (Matt. 12:8). Both "Son of Man" and "Lord" are references to Christ's sovereign power. Jesus said the sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath (Mark 2:27).  Besides the SDA do not keep the sabbath either.  The law stated that you could not go out of your house or build a fire on the sabbath. Do SDA families eat on Saturday? The law also states that the church should appoint sentries outside the city and stop anyone from coming in or going out on the sabbath, even killing them if they violate the sabbath.  I see no headline in the newspaper that a heretic was killed today by members of the SDA church for violating the sabbath so I don’t guess they are that serious about it afterall.

The World Wide Church of God sometimes called Arstrongism came out of the SDA church and another break off was David Koresh’s Branch Davidian cult. The SDA church is known for their concern with health, especially natural cures and organic foods. Many famous people have been in the church such as Paul Harvey.  Dr. John Kellog, founder of "Kellogg's" and a major supplier of breakfast cereals was a well known member of the church. They promote plans to help people quit smoking and consuming alcohol. They sponsor cooking classes, heart disease teams, narcotics education outreaches and disaster teams. There are 155 SDA hospitals and 276 clinics, dispensaries, etc. in the world. Lester Roloff used to go to one of their hospitals when he was in need of one. It is ironic, most of the cereal companies in Michigan were started by SDA members to produce healthy high-fiber food alternatives for breakfast and today most of the cereal they produce is full of sugar and one of the least healthy things you can have for breakfast.

This is a religion too that most of the members have no clue what the church believes. For more information on the SDA church try to locate a copy of “The White Lie,” by Walter T. Rea.
